Workday Prayers: Remembering God the Worker

June 21, 2023 • Life for Leaders

Scripture — Psalm 134:3 (NRSV)

May the LORD, maker of heaven and earth,
    bless you from Zion.

Focus

Because God is a worker, we are workers too, since we are created in God’s image. Thus, when we pray for blessing in our work, we are asking the God who “gets it.”

Prelude

As we do our work, every now and then it’s important to remember that God is also a worker. In the very first chapter of the Bible God is revealed as the one who “made” heaven and earth. God is a maker and created us in God’s image to be makers. The fact that God works reminds us that God understands our work in a personal way.

Pray

Gracious God, today I remember that you are a worker. You made heaven and earth. Your work was perfect, beautiful, and filled with common grace. Even today, in a world broken by sin, we can see evidence of your glorious work. For this we give you thanks and praise.

God, you created me in your image. Therefore, like you, I am a worker. Of course, I can’t work simply by calling things into existence with my words. But you have given me capabilities, talents, and gifts so that I might do good work, work that matters to you and to your creation. Thank you for the privilege of working.

I ask you today to bless my work. Help it to be productive, giving value to others. May my work relationships reflect your justice. May I do my work, not only for financial gain, but also as an act of worship to you.

Thank you, gracious God, for caring about me, including my daily work. Help me to remember your presence with me as I work today. Amen.

Ponder Throughout the Day

God the worker is present with you as you work.
