Workday Prayers: A Prayer for Integrity

July 14, 2022 • Life for Leaders

Scripture Reading – Psalm 101:2-3 (NRSV)

I will walk with integrity of heart
+++within my house;
I will not set before my eyes
+++anything that is base.

Focus

For the Christian, integrity is essential in every part of life, including our daily work. With God’s help, we can live as whole, consistent people in whatever situation we find ourselves. One way we can maintain our integrity is by paying attention with our eyes and our hearts to that which is good and glorifying to God.

Prayer

Gracious God, today I am reminded of the importance of walking with integrity in all I do. I should do this within my house, as the Psalm says, but also in my public life, including in my workplace. Help me to act at work in a way that is consistent with you and your righteousness. Help me to honor you in all that I do and say as I am working.

When I am tempted to split off from you, when I’m tempted to divide my heart, help me to remain solid and unified. Lead me not into temptation but deliver me from evil. May I be wholehearted in my service to you in every part of life.

Lord, this Psalm also reminds me not to set before my eyes anything that will turn my heart away from you. Sometimes I can indeed set my gaze upon things that are only for my own pleasure and glory. I can be drawn to things I know to be wrong. Help me not to set my eyes upon such things, both my physical eyes and the eyes of my heart. May I focus instead upon you and your blessings. May I set my heart upon that which gives you pleasure.

I know, Lord, that there is a connection between what I set before my eyes and what’s in my heart. So, may what I take in with my eyes bolster the integrity of my heart. May I be able to pray with the psalm writer, “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire other than you” (Psalm 73:25). Amen.

Ponder Throughout the Day

With God’s help, I will live with integrity of heart today.
